Konica Introduces Unitydesktop™& Unitydesktop Professional™

WINDSOR, Conn. – September 9, 2003 – Konica Business Technologies U.S.A., Inc. (Konica), the innovation leader in digital imaging solutions and a subsidiary of Konica Minolta Holdings, Inc., today announced the availability of unityDesktop™ and unityDesktop Professional™, new solutions for scanning and imaging. Part of the Konica unitySuite™, unityDesktop and unityDesktop Professional join together three scanning applications specifically designed for corporate workgroups and departments - Konica's Scantrip™, and ScanSoft's PaperPort™ and OmniPage Pro - into packaged software solutions. With the introduction of the unityDesktop offerings, Konica can now provide its customers with tiered and tailored scanning and imaging solutions to address specific business process needs.

unityDesktop delivers scanning, image cleanup, document management and light OCR capabilities. Building on unityDesktop's capabilities, the unityDesktop Professional solution also provides the ability to print to PDF, PDF editing/annotation, native PDF creation, and automatic and continuous OCR. Each unityDesktop and unityDesktop Professional software package includes 10-user licenses for each of the Scantrip, PaperPort and OmniPage Pro applications.

Konica's Scantrip™

Scantrip allows users to upload documents scanned on Konica workgroup, departmental or production document systems. The scanned images are then stored as TIFF or PDF images on the Konica printer's hard drive. Scantrip will automatically or manually poll for files stored on the hard drive and allows users to select the frequency of the searches - from once a minute to once an hour. Scanned images can be stored on the network or user's PC in any folder they choose, and then imported into an OCR package for editing, storing document archival and retrieval, or attached to an email file.

ScanSoft's PaperPort™ and DesktopDelivery™

PaperPort is the first desktop product to combine the power of creating PDF files, the convenience of local or network scanning, and the efficiency of document management, into a single, easy-to-use office productivity application. PaperPort saves and organizes paper, electronic documents and photos into an "electronic filing cabinet" on a user's computer. With PaperPort users can quickly and easily scan, annotate, email or archive documents in the PDF file format. The PDF files can be viewed, accessed and arranged via large clear thumbnails on the desktop, and shared with a simple drag-and-drop.

PaperPort's DesktopDelivery feature reduces the costs associated with manually copying and storing paper documents by automatically delivering scanned pages to the user's PC from Konica scanning devices. DesktopDelivery instantly converts scanned images into PDF files, delivers them automatically to the user's local desktop and launches PaperPort with the document open. From there its easy to drag-and-drop documents into email for sharing, store them on a PC or on the network for later use, and clean-up and/or combine them with other documents right on the PaperPort Desktop.

ScanSoft's OmniPage Pro

OmniPage Pro is a powerful productivity application that delivers the most accurate document conversion available, turning PDFs and paper - letters, contracts, tables, manuals - into editable word processing and spreadsheet documents. OmniPage Pro saves time by eliminating the need to manually reproduce documents and spreadsheets, delivering highly precise, editable results that can be used by existing PC applications. It saves money by replacing manual filing with electronic storage and retrieval - delivering OCR accuracy. The major advantage of OmniPage Pro is its ability to combine desktop ease-of-use with advanced XML, batch processing, PDF and Open eBook capabilities - all within a single application.

Pricing and Availability

unityDesktop and unityDesktop Professional are available through Konica's North American direct sales, authorized dealer and value-added reseller channels. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for unityDesktop is $1,295 and for unityDesktop Professional is $3,660.
